Basswood wood machines well and is easily carved with handheld tools, making it an excellent choice for carving. It has good nail and screw holding properties and adheres well to glue.

Basswood wood dries relatively quickly, with minimal distortion or degradation when air-dried. It exhibits considerable shrinkage but maintains dimensional stability once dried.

It is a lightweight wood with low strength and minimal resistance to twisting when exposed to moisture.

The heartwood of Basswood is not naturally resistant to pests. It can be susceptible to attack by common wood-boring insects. It can be treated with preservatives.
