Vietnam mainly exports wood and wood products to the US, China, Korea, Japan and EU-27 markets. In, the United States is the largest market and recorded the highest growth, accounting for more than 50% of the total export turnover of wood and wood products.

Top exported raw wood products

Wood chips

Wood chips are often used as fuels in countries with cold winters such as Korea, Japan, Europe, etc. In addition, they are also used as raw materials for the production of paper and industrial boards such as particle boards, MDF board. According to statistical reports, Vietnam has been at the top of the world’s largest suppliers of woodchips for many years. Specifically, in 2020, Vietnam exported more than 11 million tons of woodchips, reaching nearly 1.5 billion USD.

Veneer board

Veneer boards made from acacia wood, planted eucalyptus wood are exported in large quantities. Specifically, in the first 3 months of 2021, the export value of peeled wood products reached over 36.11 million USD, up 197% over the same period in 2020. Of which, the Chinese market alone imported more than 32, 61 million USD, accounting for about 90% of the total export value of peeled boards in the first quarter of 2021.

Particle board

The export volume and value of particle boards increased sharply in 2022. The total export volume of particle boards in the year reached 15.81 million tons, up 16.21% compared to 2021. The export value reached nearly 2.79 billion USD, up more than 60% compared to 2021. Export volume and turnover increased sharply since March and peaked in August, then tended to decrease but remained above 1.1 million tons/month in volume and over 220 million USD/month in turnover.

OSB fiberboard

OSB boards are often used as floor coverings, wall partitions, display shelves and as support frames for other interior products. In addition, boards are used a lot in the construction industry. For example, it is used as a support frame due to its extremely good rigidity and mechanical strength. According to import and export statistics of the General Department of Customs, in 2020, Vietnam exported more than 111,000 tons of fiberboard, worth nearly 46 million USD.

Plywood / Laminated wood

Vietnam exported more than 2 million tons of plywood/plywood in 2020, the export value reached 720 million USD, up 1% compared to 2019. Currently, there are about 72 countries and territories consuming Vietnamese plywood. , but plywood exports are mainly concentrated in 5 countries including: Korea, USA, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand. These five countries together account for over 84% of the total plywood export volume and turnover from Vietnam in 2020 to all markets.

The export volume of pellets will increase sharply in 2022. The export volume of the year will reach over 4.88 million tons, up 39.35% compared to 2021. The export value in 2022 will reach over $787 million, an increase of more than 90% compared to that of 2021. 2021. Monthly export volume and value in 2022 almost increased sharply compared to the same period in 2021.

The average price of export pellets in 2022 is at a record high compared to the past 10 years. This year, the price has increased continuously since January and showed signs of slowing down in the period from June 2022 to September 2022. However, the price rebounded after that and reached a record of more than 189 USD/ton in December 2022.
