Mr. Ho Thien Dang, the head of the Binh Thuan Forest Protection Department, mentioned that in 2023, the department effectively executed the core tasks and objectives outlined by the forestry sector. Furthermore, the department successfully met the specified outcomes of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Provincial People’s Committee’s planned targets.

In the realm of forest protection and firefighting management, the Forest Protection Department has proactively provided guidance to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Provincial People’s Committee. This involves the timely issuance of instructive documents and the implementation of tasks in accordance with directives from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Forestry General Department, and directives from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

By the conclusion of 2023, the provincial forest protection and management units have identified and addressed 289 violations of the Forestry Law. Of these, 217 cases underwent administrative proceedings, resulting in the confiscation of over 194 cubic meters of diverse timber. Additionally, 78 motorcycles, 1 car, a tractor, and 8 other vehicles were seized, contributing over 1.1 billion VND to the state budget. The incidents of encroachment and land occupation in the forest have notably decreased compared to the preceding year.

In the dry season of 2022-2023, the province experienced 14 incidents of ground fires beneath the forest canopy. Fortunately, none of these fire events resulted in damage to forest resources. The application of remote sensing technology, incorporating satellite images for forest resource management and monitoring, has demonstrated its effectiveness. In 2023, the software successfully identified and issued warnings for 233 suspected points indicating changes in the present status of forest resources. All these points underwent verification through on-site inspections conducted in collaboration with forest owners and the Forest Protection Sub-Department.

Regarding the utilization and development of forests, the Binh Thuan Forest Protection Department has issued timely directives to its subordinate units, including Forest Protection Management Boards, Nature Reserve Management Boards, and forestry companies. These directives encourage the active preparation of land, seedlings, technical design documents, and estimates for the implementation of afforestation, care for planted forests, and scattered tree planting in the cropping season. Consequently, these units have prepared more than 3.8 million seedlings of various forestry species and planted forests on a concentrated area exceeding 3,768 hectares, achieving 160% of the annual plan. The area of planted forests under care is approximately 12,500 hectares, meeting 100% of the annual plan. The transitioned protected forest area is 134,000 hectares, accomplishing 100% of the annual plan. The forest cover rate has reached 43%.

To sustain effective forest management, protection, and development, as mentioned by Mr. Ho Thien Dang, the department is persistently guiding forest owners and district-level Forest Protection Sub-departments to intensify urgent measures to prevent forest destruction and illegal logging. Furthermore, collaborative efforts with various sectors and localities are ongoing to consistently implement forest management and protection, forestry management, and address violations of the Forestry Law.
